Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL, is a protocol that is used to encrypt the data exchanged between a server and its users. The practical application of employing an SSL is to protect the information that customers submit on your website - a login page, a payment page if you run an online store, etc. Any info they enter in any box on the site will be submitted safely to the server, so their login or payment details shall be protected from being accessed by unauthorized people. In general, an SSL certificate requires a dedicated IP address to be installed, which means the overall cost for your presence online shall be higher. While this may not be a problem for a larger company, it might matter for a non-profit organization or a small web store which doesn't generate big revenue if additional money should be spent. That is the main reason why we have taken advantage of an extension called Server Name Indication (SNI) and we have made it possible to use a shared server IP address to set up an SSL certificate.

Shared SSL IP in Cloud Hosting

You could use a shared IP for an SSL certificate with each cloud hosting plan that we offer and irrespective if the SSL is purchased through us or through a third-party vendor. If the SSL is acquired on our end, not only could you select the shared IP to be set during the order, but you may also choose our auto-configuration option, so once you complete the purchase and approve the certificate, our system shall do the installation for you within a matter of seconds and you'll not have to do anything manually. The only difference between employing a shared IP and a dedicated one is that your website will not appear if you try to open https://the-IP-address instead of https://your-domain-name, but aside from that, everything shall be identical. With this function you can protect the information of your customers and have a risk-free website without the additional expense for a dedicated IP.

Shared SSL IP in Semi-dedicated Hosting

The shared IP option is available with all Linux semi-dedicated hosting and the setup takes just 2 mouse clicks in the hosting CP irrespective if you order an SSL from our enterprise or via a third-party supplier. There shall not be any difference in the way the certificate works or encodes the information which your site visitors submit, so your website shall be protected without spending the additional funds for a dedicated IP address. The one thing that'll be different is that https://the-shared-IP won't open your site, unlike https://the-dedicated-IP, but it is quite unlikely that anyone shall ever try to access your website in this way instead of typing your domain. We also offer an auto-configuration option for the SSLs ordered through our company and if you select it and you choose to use a shared IP address rather than a dedicated one, our system will set everything up the instant the SSL is approved and issued without the need for any action on your end.
